Should nisab be adjusted?

Another thing which is so confusing is the term "nisab". Many scholars use the old economic measures as amount of Nisab. This quantity should change from country to country according to the economic condition of the country. During the prophet Muhammed (SAW)'s period, this amount was representing that period's economic condition. I believe this should be different now.

Answer:
Nisab is fixed and cannot be changed. Different types of wealth have different nisab. It is usually measured in gold, number of animals, or quantities of grain, etc., depending on the type of the wealth. Had it been a fixed amount of money, then that could have been an issue since money usually gradually looses its purchasing power. Since that is not the case with nisab, there is no need to adjust the nisab. Most importantly, it is set by the Shari‟a Giver, and hence we do not have any authority to make any change in it.

Allah knows best.
